Green tea helps with weight loss

Tea is second only to water as the most widely consumed beverage in the world. Green tea contains naturally occurring phytochemicals, which along with caffeine can increase fat metabolism and result in weight loss.

Fat burning beverage

The effects of green tea on body weight have been well studied. In an analysis of 11 human studies it was found that green tea, when consumed for an average of 12-13 weeks resulted in weight loss or the prevention of weight gain after a diet (1). The average weight loss was 1.31 kilograms, a modest but significant effect over a relatively short period of time.

The secret to green teas effect

Green tea is a rich source of phytochemicals called catechins and contains modest amounts of caffeine. Both catechins and caffeine have been found to increase fat metabolism, however when consumed in combination – such as in a cup of green tea – they have an additive effect that is greater than either substance alone (2). Also, unlike black tea or coffee, green tea is typically drunk without milk or sugar and therefore does not contribute to daily calorie intake.
